Your Personal Belongings Coverage
Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, and Palm Coast, Florida
Under a basic homeowners insurance policy, personal items such as furniture and clothes are covered if they are stolen or destroyed by fire, hurricane, or other insured disaster. Keep in mind companies provide coverage for 50 to 70 percent of the amount of insurance you have on the structure of your home (example: $150,000 coverage on contents under a $300,000 coverage for the home itself). If you are unsure whether you have enough coverage under a basic plan, we recommend you perform a home inventory.
The Personal Belongings section of your policy also includes the off-premises coverage of your belongings anywhere in the world, unless you have specifically opted out of this coverage. Your off-premises might be limited to 10 percent of the amount of insurance you have for your possessions. You also typically have around $500 of coverage for criminal use of your credit card.
Generally your high value items such as jewelry and furs are covered for between $1,000 to $2,000 all together (with no deductible) in a basic homeowners policy, including if you lose the items. If you have many expensive belongings we recommend a Personal Property Endorsement or Floater, both of which we also recommend appraisals to determine value.
Your landscaping is also covered under standard homeowners insurance in Ormond Beach, Florida. Generally your trees and plants are covered for five percent of the insurance on the house, which comes to about $500 per item. Perils covered are theft, fire, lightning, explosion, vandalism, riot, and even falling aircraft, but not damage by wind or disease.
